Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.
Our September 2023 Athlete of The Month is Cesley Campos! Cesley began her CrossFit journey with us on September 26, 2022. She is a dedicated student in the Wharton County Junior College Radiology Program who uses gym time as a healthy stress coping strategy. Cesley keeps her mind and body fit alongside her mom and boyfriend in our afternoon CrossFit classes. She always comes to the gym with a coachable attitude and energy to learn new skills. Cesley is an excellent example of balancing school, work, and fitness to become the best version of herself.
Cesley- we are proud to have you as our September 2023 Athlete of the month and a great example of how prioritizing fitness helps strengthen the other areas of our life.
Get to know Cesley in her interview below.
1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
My name is Cesley Campos. I was born and raised in Wharton, TX, and graduated from Boling High School in 2020. I’m currently enrolled in the Radiologic Technology Program at Wharton County Junior College. My career plan is to become a Radiologic Technologist and then further my education in Mammography. I also work part-time at HEB.
2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
I joined CrossFit 1710 after my mother joined. She told me to try the one-week trial because she knew I was interested in staying fit. I was a member of Anytime Fitness, but I needed more structure and motivation. Our family friends, Sonny and Renee Quijas were already members and spoke highly about the coaches and the WOD. I was hesitant about joining, but I’m glad I did!
3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?
I have learned that CrossFit can be very challenging, but also doable. Completing the difficult WOD makes me feel accomplished. All I must do is push myself both physically and mentally to finish!!
4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?
I enjoy CrossFit 1710 because the coaches and gym members are always supportive. The motivation and encouragement are what keeps me going back. The WOD is explained well by the coaches. They demonstrate the movements step by step so that we know the correct way of doing it.
5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
My proudest moment is finishing every WOD that I start. Even on the days when I’m tired and don’t feel like working out.
6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT?
My favorite movements are anything that requires leg strength. I have more leg strength than arm strength. Some of my favorite lifts are Thrusters, Back Squat, and Deadlift.
7. WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT?
Rowing is my least favorite movement. I need to work on my technique to be more efficient without getting tired so easily. I also don’t like running. Especially long distance.
8. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
Since joining CrossFit, I noticed that I have more energy, and I sleep well. This makes it so much easier to get through the day. Being a full-time student and working part-time, I need both energy and plenty of sleep.
9. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
My goals are to improve in rowing and running. I want to move at a steady pace to be more efficient and faster. I also want to lift heavier and beat my PR. I’m still working on these goals and still need a lot of improvement.
10. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
My hobbies outside of CrossFit are spending time with my family, boyfriend, and my dog, Bo. I also love to go on vacations and enjoy time for myself.
11. WHAT IS THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?
I would emphasize that it’s all about working at your level. Not everyone can RX. You scale as needed to finish the WOD. You’re competing against yourself, not against others. The goal is to build yourself up.
12. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HOW HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?
My diet is not perfect. I try to eat healthy when I can. Life gets busy and a healthy diet can be very challenging. If I get off track, I get back on track.
13. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!
Since I started CrossFit, I have maintained my weight. I haven’t gained, so that’s a good thing. Once I complete my education, I plan to dedicate more time to CrossFit and have better results.
