Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.
Our October 2021 Athlete of The Month is Brad Crist! Brad began his CrossFit journey with us on April 28th, 2021. Every workout with Brad is a blast! He is super coachable, has an awesome attitude and sense of humor, and gives every workout his best! Because of his consistency with these awesome attributes, we see excellent growth in both Brad's physical strength, mental toughness, and nutrition. You will find Brad getting his workout in for the day in our 4:30 pm and/or 5:30 pm class. Come and join Brad in a workout and you too will see what he is talking about and why he's our AOTM! Congratulations Brad! We’re so happy to have you as our October 2021 Athlete of the Month and as an awesome athlete in our community! Get to know Brad in his interview below.

1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
I am 45 years old and married to my wife Kathy for 21 years. We have six children, three girls and three boys. They range from 19-16. I work for Shoppa’s Farm Supply as the large ag sales manager. We live in East Bernard. I enjoy spending time with my family and watching them participate in all kinds of sports. We are very active and we are always on the go.
2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
I always read the East Bernard Express. It is our local paper. One day there was an article about CrossFit 1710. I read the article and got very interested. For 18 years I had not exercised on any sort of a regular basis. It was very intimidating for me to think about joining a group like CrossFit 1710 but felt compelled to give it a try. I had to do something and this was it.
3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?
I have learned how having a group that supports, encourages, and pushes you is so critical to my fitness success. It is great to feel the comradery of our team and coaches. I have also learned how exercise makes me feel mentally. It is such a stress reliever.
4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?
The thing I enjoy the most is how I feel after CrossFit. The way the team makes me feel and the way I feel about myself when I get done completing the workout. It truly is one of the best things I have done for myself. It is addicting and I absolutely love Crossfit 1710.
5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT? My proudest moments was my birthday WOD. To know how far I’ve come and to have a workout like that and feel as good as I have. It was just tremendous.
6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
I don’t know if I have a favorite, but I do enjoy both pull ups and knees to chest. I also like any cardio we do. My least favorite is burpees or bear crawls.
7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
The stress relief has been huge. I have a lot of pressure and stress with my job. Finding an avenue that helps reduce that stress and helps me think clearly has been amazing. I have more energy for my family and more focus when I am with them.
8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
My goals were focused around physical health and I have seen my body change as I have lost weight. I am in so much better shape. I still have a long way to go but I can see and feel the results.
9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO? Spending time with my family is my absolute favorite thing to do. I also enjoy working outside in our yard. My wife says I just enjoy piddling.
10. THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?
Try it!! Don’t let preconceived notions talk you out of going. These are great people, and we are all at different levels. The one constant is we all have the same goal and that is to continue and get better both mentally and physically as we work through our fitness journey.
11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?
Absolutely my diet has changed. I have become more aware of what I am eating and why I am eating it. To this point I have lost over 10 pounds but my body composition has changed too. I am 45 years old and not looking to be a body builder. I just want to be healthy for my family and for my future grandkids.
12. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!
The best results I have had are simple. I am happier and becoming healthier each time I go to Crossfit 1710. The coaches and athletes are amazing and our commitment to each other has led to the results I have experienced and also drive me to continue with my focus.
