Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.
Our November 2022 Athlete of The Month is Tate Vanlandingham! Tate began his CrossFit journey with us on May 15, 2022 and has made incredible gains in strength, mobility, and gymnastic skills in the past 6 months! When Tate is in the gym with us, he is eager to learn, is incredibly coachable, and always pushes to be better than yesterday. Congratulations Tate! We’re so happy to have you as our November 2022 Athlete of the Month and as an awesome example of pursuing growth and excellence both in and out of the gym. Get to know Tate in his interview below.

1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
My name is Tate Vanlandingham. I’m 33 years old and from Richmond, TX.
2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
I started CrossFit in hopes to improve my physical shape beyond just lifting weights in a gym. The idea of group workouts led by a coach who tailors the workouts to each athlete was really appealing to me.
3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?
Sharing the same space and grinding out workouts with good people that help motivate you through each workout beats the ordinary gym scene any day.
4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CORSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?
I enjoy finding my physical and mental limits, having the coaching available to clearly explain and demonstrate the movements to prevent injury, and having the environment to push past limits.
5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
Each PR is a proud moment, but so far I’d say pulling a 405 deadlift and getting my 5K into 23 minute range.
6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
Favorite movement: Power Clean
Leas favorite movement: Squat Snatch
7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
In the gym, I’m in the best shape of my life. My mobility has improved a ton.
Outside of the gym: being encouraging to others.
8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
Getting my first muscle up would be sweet; I’m close.
But just being the best all-around athlete that my body is capable of is my ongoing goal.
9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
Spending time with the people close to me.
10. THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?
Just go. You won’t be disappointed. It’s going to be challenging, but the benefits are worth it. I can’t say it will be easy, but if you want to accomplish things like weight loss and overall physical fitness, in my opinion it’s the best way to achieve those goals.
11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?
My diet has definitely improved, but could be better. Currently, I’m getting back into the routine of eating the way Coach Jason laid out (for the athletes in the gym) a few months back.
12. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!
The biggest improvement that stands out is taking my 5K time from a 27–28-minute 5K down to a sub 24 minute 5K. My squat clean increased from 135 to 200lbs and my deadlift improved from 275 (about a year ago) to 405 pounds today. The list goes on and on. My overall physique change has been obvious to friends and family. Mental fortitude has improved regarding starting and finishing difficult tasks and my desire to improve in all aspects of life has improved as well.
