Christmas is near and everyone is getting geared up to celebrate the holiday season with family & friends. However, the holidays are not always happy for everyone. Many will experience increased stress, loneliness, anxiety, and or depression.

It is important that we recognize that the men and women we interact with daily may not be actually doing “fine” like they tell us.

I have been in that place. Last month I was not okay. I had a few tough mental health weeks so I used the coping mechanisms that I know work for me. One of my strongest and most effective coping strategies is making my workouts a priority. There were actually a few days during my tough period that I didn‘t feel like working out (yes- coaches have those days too).

Because I know that my mood will improve and stress will decrease when the workout is over, I made myself show up and work out. Keeping that routine of getting in the gym and turning to my fitness family for support helped me break through the dark.

If you are not really “fine,” please know that you are not alone. You have a community full of people who will help you get better..., and things can ALWAYS get better. Do not carry that weight alone. Please let others help you, because there are so many of us who want to help you.

Check on your family & friends who haven’t been ”themselves” lately. They might really need support & reassurance and will be grateful for the effort we make to let them know how loved they truly are.
