June 2023 Athlete of the Month: Miguel Santes


Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.


Our June 2023 Athlete of The Month is Miguel Santes! Miguel began his CrossFit journey with us on November 6, 2022. He is a hardworking husband and father who owns and operates the Cutting Edge Barbershop in Wharton, Texas. Miguel serves the Wharton community in multiple volunteer roles. Miguel usually comes to our 5:00 am classes to prepare physically and mentally for the day ahead. His dedication to learn proper technique and form has paid off as we see Miguel making huge mobility and strength gains!

Miguel- we are proud to have you as our June 2023 Athlete of the month and a fantastic example of how commitment to move well leads to increased fitness and health!


Get to know Miguel in his interview below.


1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

I am 44 year old husband to my beautiful wife and father to 4 sons. I am the business owner of the Cutting Edge Barbershop in Wharton, Texas. I serve the community as a member of the Wharton ISD School Board, Lions Club, WCJC Cosmetology Advisory Board, Wharton Chamber of Commerce Board Member, and President of the Wharton Soccer League.


2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?

My health was deteriorating, and I was getting out of shape. After a talk with my doctor I told her about doing CrossFit and she told me to go for it, so I did.


3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?

That is not as intimidating as I thought it would be.


4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CORSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?

I enjoy the people and the workouts.


5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

So far, when I was able to do a squat snatch.


6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?

One of my favorites is power snatch. My least favorite would be burpees 😂


7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

My overall health has improved, I’m definitely getting stronger and CrossFit is getting easier for me. 8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

To maintain a healthy lifestyle and I am definitely getting better.


9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?

I love to coach soccer.


10. THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?

Just do it. It took me a while to make the decision to join. Just like anything else, consistency is the key to get better at it

11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?

I am more conscious about what I eat. Workouts can be intense at times and I don’t want to loose my gains. Eating healthier is also part of a healthy lifestyle.

12. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!

One of my biggest gains have been getting stronger legs since my job requires to stand for a long period of time the muscles on my legs and back are able to support my joint a lot better and my overall health has improved!!!
