Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about. Our June 2021 Athlete of The Month is Teresa Lilie! Teresa began her CrossFit journey with us in September 2020. Every workout with Teresa is fun! She is very coachable, has an awesome attitude, and courageously steps out of her comfort zone. Because of her consistency with these awesome attributes, we see excellent growth in both Teresa’s physical strength and mental toughness. You will find Teresa getting her workout in for the day in 5:30p class. Come and join Teresa in a workout and you too will see what she is talking about and why she's our AOTM! Congratulations Teresa! We’re so happy to have you as our June 2021 Athlete of the Month and as an awesome athlete in our community! 1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
I am Teresa Lilie and I'm 48 years old. My husband, Henry and I have been married for 25 years. We have two children Dylan (24) and Ashley(20). I am a sales/marketing Director for Sacred Care Home Health. I am a super fun and out going person. I am also very sociable. I love chips, salsa, and can never turn down a good Margarita.
2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
I'm not new to CrossFit but new to the CrossFit 1710 family. I joined CrossFit 1710 in September 2020. I started my CrossFit journey in 2014 and been doing it for 6 years now. When I first stared I wanted to lose weight and become fit. I wanted to live healthier and feel good about myself.
3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?
I didn't think when I joined CrossFit 1710 that I would love it just as much as the box I used to be a member of. The coaches hands down are awesome. Not only did they welcome me, I felt like I knew everyone forever. I fit right in and I call them my CrossFit family.
4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?
I enjoy how encouraging everyone is to each other and how much I enjoy watching people achieve their goals. I also enjoy both Jason and Jodie as coaches. Having a coach to push you to the last second because every Rep counts!
5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
My proudest moments is anytime you can get a PR but I guess my all time proudest moment is my 180lb deadlift. I also am proud that I competed in 3 CrossFit competitions.
6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
My favorite lift is the deadlift. My least favorite are rowing and wall balls. It's more challenging because I have short legs and arms.
7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
The impact that CrossFit has made in my life is that I am more aware of the food I'm putting in my body and how it effects your workouts and the way you feel on a daily basis. I have learned to eat healthier and learned to count and log my macros. I also feel good about myself and how much CrossFit has taught me about movement and becoming stronger. I didn't do CrossFit during COVID and felt like I was really missing something. Crossfit has helped me with stress and dealing with anxiety. CrossFit is my happy place and has helped me with times in my life and made me become myself again.
8.WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
One of my goals is to compete in a CrossFit competition before the end of the year. I also want to see continued progress and my endurance improve.
9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
When I'm not CrossFitting I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I like spending time outside doing yard work and keeping busy. I enjoy Summer time the most because I like to be in the sun and on the beach. My husband and I enjoy wine tasting together and being able to do whatever we want and we make sure we have a date night once a week.
10.THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?
You have to try CrossFit even though it looks intimidating. So many times I hear people say that they need to get in shape before they try it out. I always laugh because you don't get in shape to get in shape. I always make sure to tell anybody wanting to start CrossFit that it can be scaled or modified for each athlete. We all do the same work just maybe not as much weight or a modified movement. Try it you will love it!
11.WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?
My diet has really changed the most since starting CrossFit. I learned what to eat to build muscle and what to eat to lose weight. I learned how to count macros and it has been working for me. I measure myself and try not to step on the scale but once a month. Eating the correct protein and carbs will give you the results you want. You just have to put in the work and stay consistant with your diet.
12.RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!
My results since starting CrossFit 1710 I have become stronger and my endurance has become better. I have also leaned out even though the scale hasn't moved as much as I want. But I definitely can see I'm gaining muscle and losing fat. I can also say that I sleep much better and have so much energy.
