Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.
Our June 2019 AOTM is Gabe Hutchinson! Gabe pushes himself every single time he steps foot in the box. He thrives if you program anything involving cardio. Careful if you come WOD with him during a running day, you may be not be able to see him. Come hang out with him and you’ll see why he’s our AOTM! Get to know Gabe in his interview below. Congratulations Gabe! We are thrilled to have you as this month’s Athlete of the Month.
1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
My name is Gabe Hutchinson. I’m 40 years old and have been married to my wife Jodie for 14 years. We have 2 boys together: Bradley (11) and Max (7) and I work as an AC technician at Hunter’s Air & Heat. I’ve been an athlete at CrossFit 1710 for about 1 year and 3 months now.
2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
My wife, Jodie, was already a member at CrossFit 1710 and I thought it would be something we could do together to spend more time with each other. I also realized it would be a healthy way for me to decompress after work, before spending time with my family in the evening.
3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?
I learned that with a lot of hard work and commitment to CrossFit that it is very possible at age 40 to be in better shape than you were at age 25.
4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CORSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?
I enjoy CrossFit 1710 because I get to push myself hard in workouts and have met new people. CrossFit 1710 feels like a family.
5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
My proudest CrossFit moment was competing with Matt Llanes at Piranaha Rama in Bay City in April 2019. At first I wasn’t sure about competing, but the whole experience was great! We earned first place in the Men’s Scaled Division and it was validating to see our training and hard work pay off.
6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
Favorite Movement- Squat Cleans
Least Favorite- There are too many to list.., lol. Turkish Get-Ups are at the top of my least favorite, along with overhead squats and anything with handstands.
7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
I feel like it has made me a better overall person. I’m less stressed, healthier, and happier because of CrossFit 1710.
8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
I would like to be able to string together 10 bar muscle ups in a row. I have gotten one BMU, so I know if I keep at it I can get there.
9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
I like to spend time with my family and fish in Matagorda, TX.
10. THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?
Don’t be afraid to come and try CrossFit. It’s a great atmosphere with awesome people. You get an excellent workout with a fun and fit group.
11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?
My diet hasn’t really changed since starting CrossFit, but I do recommend that you watch what you eat at lunch if you know you are going to work out later. #NoCheeseBurgerAndFriesAtLunch
12. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!
I’m stronger, leaner, and faster than I have been in a long time!
