Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.
Our July 2022 Athlete of The Month is Lori Becerra! Lori began CrossFitting with us on February 15, 2022 and has earned amazing gains in the past 5 months! Lori comes to every class with a growth mindset, ready to learn, and asking for ways to grow stronger. As a result she has gained tremendous strength, mobility, and confidence in and out of the gym. This is only the beginning of Lori's CrossFit journey and we are excited about the progress she continues to create each new day. Come and join Lori in a workout and you too will see what she is talking about and why she's our AOTM! Congratulations Lori! We’re so happy to have you as our July 2022 Athlete of the Month and as wonderful example of what CrossFit culture is all about! Get to know Lori in her interview below.

1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
My name is Lori Becerra. I am a wife and a mother of 3 and I love being a Mom. It was one of my great accomplishments in my life. I have worked in the turfgrass industry for over 13 years now and absolutely love it (most of the time except Spring)-my busiest time of the year. 😊 I am the only girl out of 3 brothers and 3 step brothers. I grew up in Boling and I am loud and proud Boling Bulldog!
2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
I started CrossFit because my friend LeAnn invited me and I didn’t want to disappoint her.
3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?
I have learned so much since starting CrossFit. The most important thing is that I can really do more than I ever expected myself to do. I have learned that not all people are the same and that there are some really great people ready to cheer you on even on your worst days.
4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?
I love the atmosphere at our gym. We are truly blessed with the best coaches that give each of us the time and attention we all need. The athletes become your family very quickly as we all become one working together each day. You don’t really get that kind of support at “your everyday gym.” CrossFit is definitely a fast-paced workout, but with modifications it is doable for the average person like myself.
5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
My proudest moment would definitely be doing the overhead squat!! When I first started CrossFit, I couldn’t even do an air squat, and one time when we were still at our old location I fell in bushes. I would also say attempting scaled box jumps, as I have conquered my fear of jumping.
6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
My favorite movement is lifting in general. It makes me feel strong! My least favorite is burpees; I feel like that they may or may not take me out one day. (Just kidding)
7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
I have taken back my life since joining CrossFit. When I first started, I silently suffered with severe anxiety and depression. My main reason for continuing this journey is because of my mental health. God has really given me CrossFit as an outlet to conquer those hidden struggles. When I find myself overly anxious at home now, I pick up my dumb bells or kettle ball and start moving. I never thought in a million years I would be excited to work out. It has most definitely saved my life. I told my family if I had not started CrossFit I would have been admitted to a mental hospital. You never really know what someone is going through. Now I have confidence in myself and my ability to be a better me for myself and my family.
8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
To be honest when I started CrossFit, I had no goals. My main objective was to get well mentally. However, with consistency and hard work my new goal is to lose about 20 more pounds.
9. WHEN YOU ARE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
I love to be with my family at the beach and I love being on the water in my boat, fishing. I also enjoy reading a good book.
10. THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTING?
Just start, keep showing up, and remember to believe in yourself!
11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?
The biggest change I have made in my diet is portion control, drinking more water, less sugar or no sugar most days, and little to no bread. I am more aware of the things I eat because I realize how hard I work in the gym.
12. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!
Since starting CrossFit in late February I have lost 27 pounds. I was wearing a size 18/20 and can now wear a size 16. My energy level is way up. The anxiety and depression I once had are almost non existent most days. My mental health is the best it has been in years.

For anyone on the fence about joining just do it!! You will not be disappointed. Some days are easier and some days are harder, but it is always worth it. My only regret is not starting sooner. CrossFit 1710 has been one of my biggest blessings and saved me at a time in my life when I did not believe I could keep going. I would like to thank my 5am class for always encouraging me. You all will never fully know how much you have impacted my life. I am truly honored to be the Athlete of the Month.
