Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.
Our January 2023 Athlete of The Month is Ashley Crumley! Ashley began her CrossFit journey with us in July 2022, is one of our morning athletes, and always brings the energy and a smile to our 5am classes. Since we've had the privilege of coaching Ashley, we have seen her overcome physical adversity through patience, faith, and trust in God's plan for her growth. Ashley is so dedicated to consistently attending classes, she always finds a way to make her morning workouts happen whether in the gym with us or at home with her family. Congratulations Ashley! We’re so happy to have you as our January 2023 Athlete of the Month and as an awesome example that moms are STRONG. Get to know Ashley in her interview below.
1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
My name is Ashley Crumley & I am a 30-year-old Christian. I have the most amazing husband, Tim, & 4 wonderful children. I work for ECI which stands for Early Childhood Intervention & I love being able to help families daily with their children making sure that they are reaching their developmental milestones. I attend Grace Community Fellowship in Wharton, Texas with my family & love growing my relationship with the Lord.
2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
I got to church with Coach Jodie & she kept talking about it so one day I approached her about it because what I was doing wasn’t helping me reach my goals & I needed the motivation to complete difficult moves when working out.
3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?
No matter how hard something is, IT CAN BE DONE... and stick with it because, I can tell you from experience- it (CrossFit) works!
4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?
I like the coaches & all the supportive athletes that help encourage me every day. There are things I never thought I could do & even some I can’t, but I still try. If you aren’t able to do something, I love that the coaches will either modify the move for you or have you do something else & help you out any way that they can.
5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
Every time I PR or I get faster at a certain skill I used to be slower at.
6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORTIE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
My favorite movement would probably be squats (all different kinds except pistols) & my least favorite are burpees & lunges.
7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
I have more energy to be able to play & interact with my kids & I notice I can move better throughout the day without being in pain.
8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
My goal is to build & tone up my upper body, become a better runner, lose some weight/inches, & never give up. I would say that with consistent class attendance, I will see these goals happen within a year.
9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
Spending quality time with my family/friends & growing my relationship with Christ any chance I can get.
10. THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?
DO IT!!! I’ve had several people come up to me & ask me about it but they get scared. Then I tell them how the coaches work with you where you are because they want to meet the athlete where they are & if I can do it anyone can!
11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?
This has been my biggest struggle but I’m getting better everyday with my nutrition by working on one thing at a time & trying to eat more vegetables.
12. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!
Since starting at the end of July (free week)/beginning of August (full membership) I have lost 6 pounds and gone down one pants size.

I have had a couple of injuries that have set me back, but it hasn’t stopped me from coming to the gym pretty much every day, unless my husband wasn’t home to stay with my kids. The first injury I had was an upper/middle trapezius strain (Grade 1) with a Grade 1 sprain of supraspindus ligaments & I had to modify for about a month & it has made me stronger/more aware of how I move. My second injury is a Grade 2 quad tendon strain @ insertion site & I ended up getting an MRI on my knee due to it starting to swell & it wasn’t getting better but the results came back & there was no tear but just inflammation in the joint itself. I continue to wear my knee brace until I get fully cleared to workout without it & it has been hard because I haven’t been able to do some of my favorite moves or running so I can improve in that area, but I haven’t let it stop me. I continue to go every day & just work with what I can & I still see improvement every day!
