January 2020 Athlete of The Month: Shannon Haltom!

Writer's picture: CrossFit 1710CrossFit 1710

Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.

Our January 2020 Athlete of The Month is Shannon Haltom! Shannon has been an athlete with us since August 21st, 2019. Shannon comes in to the box with a big smile and is always ready to put in work! You'll usually find Shannon in our 5:00am class! Come and join Shannon in a workout and you’ll see why she's our AOTM! Get to know Shannon in her interview below. Congratulations Shannon! We’re so happy to have you as our January 2020 Athlete of the Month and as an awesome athlete in our community!

1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

I’m married to Bo Haltom and we have two pretty cool kiddos (Gracen 8, Jacob 5). I am a Registered Nurse by trade and work as the Chief Nursing Officer at CHI St. Luke’s Brazosport in Lake Jackson. I am also the Director of the Rescue Center at Rescue Church. My passion is ministry and seeing people walk in their God-given purpose! I want to be the best version of me, physically, mentally and spiritually. I love to read, run and eat Mexican food :)

2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?

I wanted to become stronger and healthier. I love to run but had little to no core strength. I want to travel the world, cross the desert, climb mountains and do missions…..that just might require me to be in shape. So I joined CrossFit for strength and conditioning.

3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?

That I am stronger than I think and I don’t have to be a size 2 to be fit and in shape. I have learned that my body is capable of a lot more than I gave it credit for! I can actually climb over a box that is as tall as me and box jump..LOL

4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?

The camaraderie for sure! The encouragement from other athletes in the box is amazing! No one is ever left to finish a workout alone, there is always that one person that will stay with you and encourage you through to the end. There might even be that one athlete that will do extra reps with you just to remind you that you can do it (Heather Kalina).

5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

The Box Jump for sure! and...80 single unders unbroken (me and the jump rope have a love hate relationship)

6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?

Favorite: Air Squats, wall balls and the rower

Least Favorite: Burpees and/or the Junk-Yard dog

7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

It has made me stronger both at the core and conditioned my endurance. My run is even faster. I has given me accountability in the workout not only to finish it in the gym but to show up.

8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

I want to get my mile to 8:30, I am at 9:36 today.

I want to conquer the jump rope this year and do a double under (no where near this!)

Complete a 24 in box jump

9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?

Family time with kids, work on outreach ministry events/classes, and read.

10. THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?

Start small. You will have plenty of time to add weights, run farther or go longer. You will be more sore than you think after the first couple times so ease yourself in. Coach Jason is pretty gifted in what he does so stick with his recommendations.

You CAN do it! Stay encouraged ...and all that CrossFit “stuff” (hand grips, jump ropes, shoes) brand matters….

11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?

YES! I eat cleaner! I am certainly not a nazi about it...I love chocolate...and pancakes...and ice cream :) LOL but yes, I eat more fruits and vegetables and have stock in protein mix, but it works! I have more energy and I can tell a difference in my workouts and my energy levels when I don't eat clean.

12. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!

Man! I have Muscles!!! I feel healthier and I eat better!

FREEWRITE:

If you are trying to decide if CrossFit is right for you, just try it! You won’t die on the first day...I promise. And, you can do all that stuff you think you can’t do. Plus, everyone is encouraging you, cheering you on. If someone has to scale down to less weights or you can’t run as far, you aren’t looked down upon, you're cheered on! YOU CAN DO IT!
