Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.
Our February 2023 Athlete of The Month is Tyler Rempel! Tyler began his CrossFit journey with us in September 2022! Tyler is incredibly hard working both in and outside of them gym! He's a full time husband, father to a toddler, and ER Nurse. Despite his busy schedule, Tyler consistently makes working out at CrossFit 1710 a priority. He's a busy man, but Tyler makes time to make CrossFit work for him. Most class days, Tyler comes in early to work on gymnastics skills... and it shows!!! His strength and skills have greatly improved in the past 5 months. Congratulations Tyler! We’re so happy to have you as our February 2023 Athlete of the Month and as an awesome example of hard work paying off. Get to know Tyler in his interview below.
1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
Hi, I am 30 years old, have a lovely wife and a 13-month-old son. I work full-time as an emergency room RN in Sugar Land.
2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
I have always loved being active and working out. Over the last year, I lost motivation to go to the gym and thought I would try something new. CrossFit was just down the road, and it seemed like a good idea to give it a try.
3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?
I have learned that when I push myself, I can accomplish more than I thought possible.
4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CORSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?
I enjoy the competitive atmosphere during a workout. I also enjoy the structured nature of the workout. There is always a solid plan starting out. I also enjoy how supportive everyone is. Even small accomplishments are celebrated.
5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
One of my proudest moments is being able to rope climb. Any workout that I can RX (there are very few) always gives me a sense of accomplishment.
6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
My favorite movements are running, overhead squats, and wall balls. My least favorite movements are anything that includes rowing or biking.
7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
It has given me motivation to be more active outside of the gym even while doing everyday activities.
8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
One of my goals is to run a 5K in less than 25 minutes. I still have a few more minutes I need to take off to reach that goal. I also want to be able to consistently do toes-to-bar. I can only do 3-5 in a row, so there is still work to be done.
9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
I enjoy working in my yard and mowing the lawn. I enjoy spending time outside with my son. Reading is a relaxing activity I use to unwind with.
10. THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?
Don’t be scared. The coaches have a great way of developing a safe and effective workout plan for everyone, regardless of skill level.
11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?
I have definitely become more aware of what I eat. I have been able to make a more conscious effort to remain hydrated throughout the day (and night, since I work night shift).
12. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!
I have lost about 10 pounds since starting CrossFit. I also notice an improvement in my mobility.
