Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.
Our February 2022 Athlete of The Month is Janie Agu! Janie originally began CrossFitting with us on November 17, 2017. We were sad she left us for a bit but we are super happy she is back with us now! She is back and super motivated to meet her health and fitness goals! She began her CrossFit journey with us on January 1st, 2022. Every workout with Janie is fun! She loves to dance! She is super coachable, loves to laugh, has an awesome attitude, and gives every workout her best! Because of her consistency with these awesome attributes, we see excellent growth in Janie's physical and mental strength to put in the work to achieve her desired goals. 1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
My name is Janie Agu. I am 31 years young, I work full-time as an RN/BSN, and a mom of two handsome boys.
2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
One of the main reasons I began CrossFit was for the mental and phycal challenges.Like the saying if it doesn't challenge you it won't change you! CrossFit does that for me.
3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?
Things that I have learned while doing CrossFit. One, burpees will not kill you. In fact they are really beneficial for you but I am still not a huge fan!! Two, just show up on the days you don't feel like it. My coach Jodie made me realize this about CrossFit that'll you are always going to unlock endless levels of growth. CrossFit isn't something you start and complete. It is and endless competition with yourself.
4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?
Okay what I love about CrossFit is the group of athletes I get to enjoy the torture with. I am usually at the 5 am class for it to be so early we sure have a good time. When I feel I can't push myself any further I have a squad motivating me to go further, go harder, and definitely check in on me if I miss a class or two.
5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
Proudest moment so far is squatting 215 lbs I was so surprised! It was heavy but not too heavy. I can only imagine with consistent lifting how much stronger and better my form will be in the next upcoming months.
6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
My favorite lift so far is squatting apparently I am good at it without really trying. My least favorite movement is burpees. I hate them! If I could learn to breathe through them they probably won't be so bad. Never mind they still will!
7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
CrossFit has impacted my overall health tremendously in the gym by making me stronger and increasing my endurance. Exercises that were once a struggle slowly but surely have been a little easier. Outside my life it has helped me be self accountable. My phone goes on Do Not Disturb at 9 pm. to rest up my 4 am alarm. I don't like missing class if it prevents me from going it, they, or whatever has to go!! It is all about self determination, self discipline, self love....this journey is finding me. Not mom, not nurse, not wife, not daughter...but Janie.
8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
I have a long ways for my goals!! My core strength and upper body have always been my weakest. My coach Jason always has to remind me to keep my core in check when lifting. I notice when I actually listen I find my core engaging with my lifts. Imagine that! Overall, I want to be able to complete a WOD by Rx and not scaled.
9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
Outside of CrossFit you will surely find me at my boys sporting events. My boys keep me active they do it all from football, basketball, and now its baseball season.
10. THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?
Don't doubt yourself if you're thinking about joining CrossFit...For example, I am too slow, too big, not strong enough...just not enough of anything. That's a lie! You are enough! The idea of you wanting to join is huge! Now think about applying that thought in to action. CrossFit is for all athletes regardless of size, endurance, strength, etc...Just start one WOD at a time.
11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?
Since starting CrossFit I have been meal prepping my meals. Time has never been in my favor with working full-time and both my boys play multiple sports. I am always on the go! Meal prepping has helped me not to be in starvation mode. I pay attention more now what I consume. I still eat my favorite foods just in moderation.
12. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!
Well! Don't get on the scale! Throw it out! So far I am starting to notice I am losing inches, clothes are fitting better, and my muscle are beginning to be visibly defined. I can't wait to see my progress in my birthday month July my goal is to wear a bathing suit and be comfortable in my own skin.

Of coures I dont FEEL like getting up at 4 am. I don't FEEL like doing any burpees in a minute. I don't FEEL like running 800m, bike 3000m, row 1000m, etc.... If I allowed my feelings to control what I wanted to do at that very moment I would be hindering my own goals. The only person that is stopping you to reach your full potential is you! I learned to ignore my feelings in order to gain self growth. You can too!
