December 2022 Athlete of the Month: Jon Cochrum

Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.

Our December 2022 Athlete of The Month is Jon Cochrum! Jon began his CrossFit journey with us in June 2019, but temporarily paused his membership. He joined us in our new location in July 2022 and since then he has really focused on discipline and consistency with nutrition and training! Jon is hungry to learn and grow both in and out of the gym. As a husband, father, and business owner, Jon has actively sought personal growth through the 75 Hard Program. He is both a 75 Hard AND Phase 1 finisher with plans to continue to grow through Andy Frisella's mental toughness program by completing the Live Hard Year. Congratulations Jon! We’re so happy to have you as our December 2022 Athlete of the Month and as an awesome example of pursuing growth and excellence both in and out of the gym. Get to know Jon in his interview below.

1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

My name is Jon Cochrum. I am a 35-year-old Christian, born and raised in Wharton. I have a beautiful wife and two wonderful kids. I own and operate my own businesses, Trailer Place and Star Metal Fab, located here in Wharton, TX. I actively pursue growing closer to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by studying God’s word and attending River Pointe Church with my family.

2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?

The instructor lead classes really attracted me to CrossFit. I do enough decision making in one day without having to decide what workout to do every day as well.

3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?

Doing something hard EVERY DAY has multiplying effects if you stick with it.

4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CORSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?

What I like most about CrossFit 1710 is the great Coaches and supportive environment they’ve created. There’s no pressure to do something you’re not comfortable with, but they’ll encourage you to keep growing and getting stronger. What I like the most about CrossFit in general is that it’s functional fitness that applies to real world situations. It doesn’t just make you strong or muscular in appearance, it makes you athletic.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

Doing a 15’ rope climb was my proudest moment because I didn’t think I could do it. We hadn’t worked on that in a while and the last time I tried I wasn’t even close to being able to do it. So that was pretty cool.

6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?

My favorite movement is deadlifting. My least favorite is probably burpees.

7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

The amount of energy I have throughout my day from consistently working out is probably the biggest change which has really helped me be more productive in all areas of my life; In and out of the gym.

8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

My goal is to keep up with Coach Jason in a workout lol. I think I’m about 9 months of hard work away from seeing the light at the end of that tunnel. Realistically, probably two years out from being able to perform anywhere close to that level.

9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?

Spend time with my family and friends wherever that may be.

10. THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?

Don’t be scared. People tell me they’re scared of CrossFit. CrossFit 1710 is a safe, encouraging environment and all the movements and workouts are scalable (personally modifiable). Nobody is going to push you to do something that you’re not ready for. Just start! Join the CrossFit 1710 family! You’ll be glad you did!

11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?

Since starting CrossFit I’ve focused on eating single ingredient foods primarily consisting of meat and vegetables.

12. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!

Weight-wise I’ve lost 40lbs in the last 4 months.

Strength-wise I’m now able to do rope climbs, handstand pushups, pull ups and my running pace has increased significantly.
