Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.
Our July 2023 Athlete of The Month is Skylar Albert! Skylar began her CrossFit journey with us on September 12, 2022. She is a Wharton County Junior College student who is now pursuing a career as a state trooper. After several months of learning CrossFit fundamentals and gaining experience in our coach-led classes, Skylar became a regular during our Open Gym time. She works at her family’s business, EZ Lube, in Wharton, so Open Gym allows her to get in daily movement around her busy school/work schedule. Most days Skylar is getting her workout in alongside Coach Jason and her brother Hayden, testing future workouts with him in the hottest time of the day! She has put in a ton of hard work to achieve the physical fitness standards required for DPS training. Skylar- we are proud to have you as our July 2023 Athlete of the month and a great example of how hard work and consistency pay off!
Get to know Skylar in her interview below.
1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
My name is Skylar Albert. I am 21 years old and pursuing a career as a State Trooper. I enjoy traveling to different places both in and out of the United States.
2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
What made me want to join CrossFit was Coach Jodie talking about it in class (at Wharton County Junior College). I was going to the gym often, but I didn’t really enjoy it. I talked to Jodie one day after class and kept thinking about it. Then another day Jason came into our family shop (EZ Lube) and I talked to him about it. After talking to both of them, I decided, “why not try it and see how I like it.”
3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?
I have learned that I can accomplish anything when I push myself AND most importantly, enjoy what I’m doing.
4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CORSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?
I enjoy the people at CrossFit and how everyone becomes a family.
5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
I can’t say I have a “proudest” CrossFit moment… I’m proud of myself for showing up even when I don’t feel like it or I’m just tired. I’m also proud when I hit a PR (personal record). There are so many moments, that I can’t pick just one specific moment to be my proudest.
6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
I don’t know that I really have a favorite movement besides handstands. I enjoy rowing and deadlifts. My least favorite movements are double unders/single unders, wall balls, and burpees.
7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
An impact CrossFit has had on my is giving me more energy and helping me manage stress.
8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
My goal at Open Gym is to beat Coach Jason and Justin (Henson)… and I have done this with handstand holds 😊 Does that count?
9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
When I’m not crossfitting I’m hanging out with my family and playing canasta with my nana and parents. If I’m not doing that then I’m binge watching a series. I also work with my parents at their business, EZ Lube.
10. THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?
One thing I would say is to just give it a try. It may look intimidating and hard, but it’s so much fun! Everyone wants to see you succeed!!
11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?
My diet has definitely improved. I am more cautious about what I eat.
12. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!
Since joining CrossFit mid September 2022, I have notice that my arms and legs have gotten stronger. I also noticed that I have thinned out quite a bit. I get told that I look good by people who have known me since before I started CrossFit.
