April 2023 Athlete of the Month: Gabe Hutchinson

Writer's picture: Jodie HutchinsonJodie Hutchinson

Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.

Our April 2023 Athlete of The Month is Gabe Hutchinson! Gabe began his CrossFit journey with us in March 2018. Gabe moves to live and lives to move. He is an active husband, father, and general manager for Hunter’s Air & Heat. He comes to our 5:00am classes ready to train; spends the workday in hot attics, on rooftops, and in the blazing sun working to keep customers cool and comfortable; gets in another workout in the afternoon; and still has energy to play baseball or pool with his son and move outdoors with his family in the evening. Recently Gabe committed to the 75 Hard Challenge and is growing even more mentally & physically strong! Our members and coaches are incredibly inspired by Gabe’s discipline with nutrition. Everyone has taken note of the undeniable aesthetic and strength gains Gabe has earned through his commitment to his health. Gabe- We’re incredibly proud to have you as our April 2023 Athlete of the Month and as fantastic example of consistency and discipline in pursuing mental toughness and whole health growth.

Get to know Gabe in his interview below.

1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

My name is Gabe Hutchinson. I am 43 years old. I am married to my beautiful with Jodie, for almost 18 years now. We have two children: Bradley (15) and Max (11). I am the general manager at Hunter’s Air & Heat and have been in the AC business for over 20 years.

2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?

My wife was very involved in CrossFit and I wanted to spend more time with her, so I decided to give it a try. I have been CrossFitting now for 5 years.

3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?

Consistency with workouts and nutrition is the most important thing to help you reach your goals.

4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CORSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?

I enjoy the variety of workouts. Every day is something new and different that keeps you on your toes. One day we could be running 3 miles, the next day we might lift heavy weight, and then another day we focus on gymnastics. The community we have at CrossFit 1710 is a fun, engaging group of people. We continually get to meet new people and include them in our lives.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

Recently I have been able to get larger sets of double-unders. I am proud of that. Competing in The Open this year was a fun and humbling experience.

6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?

My least favorite movement is definitely handstands.

I really like overhead squats because they are a humbling challenge, requiring more muscles and balance than people realize. I also enjoy rowing and now double-unders.

7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

I can physically and mentally perform my job better because I can functionally move better. That is something I am going to need to be able to do late into my life. Functional fitness is a must.

8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

In March 2023 I began the 75 Hard Program to strengthen my mental and physical toughness. At the time of this interview, I am 50 days in and feeling strong. It has helped me establish mental and physical discipline that I know will continue beyond this 75-day challenge.

9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?

I like to be outside, fish, and hunt. I enjoy spending time with my wife and kids, going to church, and hanging out with friends.

10. WHAT IS THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?

Stay mentally focused on yourself: your mind and your body. Don’t compare yourself to others.

11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?

My diet has changed. I have a protein shake for breakfast and eat whole foods for lunch and dinner. This includes sweet potatoes, a variety of vegetables, chicken, and turkey.

12. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!

I have lost 10 pounds in the last few months due to discipline with nutrition and staying focused on fitness. At 43 I am in better shape than I was 20 years ago.

I’d like to thank my wife Jodie for continually motivating me in and out of the gym. Jason has put in so much hard work into making all of us at CrossFit 1710 better people. I am thankful for the community we have.
